About This Quote

When the narrator of the story, Elisabeth, sees her friend, Milena, she is surprised to see that her friend has very long eyelashes. When she asks Milena about it, Milena says that she is adopted. When she was a little girl, Milena lived in an orphanage with other girls who were not adopted by families. They were all treated the same way.

They were assigned to a family based on their age and were usually sent away after they hit puberty. Since most of the girls in the orphanage were older than Milena, she was sent to live with a kind couple who wanted a child for them. The couple had no children of their own at the time and hoped that having a little girl would make their marriage complete. After living with these people for several years, one day Milena decides to break free from the system that took her from her family and refused to let go of her individuality.

She goes out into the world and finds that she cannot wear pants and becomes a nun in order to be close to God. While growing up, she was always expected to conform to social expectations and conventions and felt like an outsider in this world. When Elisabeth asks Milena why she has such long eyelashes when she is adopted, Milena says that it is because when she was younger her parents told her that they had rescued her from an orphanage even though they did not want any children themselves. She wanted proof so she asked them when they found her.

They told her that they found her at an orphanage and that they did not know how old she was or where exactly they had gotten her from but that they took care of her well and loved her like their own daughter. This story helps show how we should look at people we decide we want to be close too and how we should accept others if we are given proof that people truly love us for who we are instead of what we look like or what we believe in or what our last name may be .
